How it works

Five steps for every business

  1. Add the business

Create it with its type, registration and sales tax numbers.

  2. Set it up

Accounts, taxes, cost centers and the indicators to track.

  3. Enter the data

Financial, management (costing) and fiscal entries.

  4. Verify

Check with a trial balance and duplicate checks.

  5. Report

Generate financial, cost-center and fiscal reports and the KPI dashboard.

What’s inside

Set up for each business

Every business has its own setup, from production businesses with cost centers to self-employed people.

  • Chart of accounts

Start from a template and add your own accounts, with suppliers and customers for payables and receivables.

  • Cost centers

For production businesses: raw materials, direct labour and manufacturing overhead.

  • Units of measure

Conversion between the units a business buys, makes and sells in.

  • CRA and Revenu Québec profile

A tax jurisdiction profile with sales tax setup: GST/QST, ITC/ITR.

  • Fiscal accounts

Capital cost allowance (CCA) categories and corporate tax rate parameters.

  • KPIs

Choose which indicators to track for each business.

Reports

One set of entries, every report

  • Financial statements

Balance sheet, income statement and statement of equity.

  • Cost-center reports

Raw materials, direct labour and overhead by cost center.

  • Fiscal reports

Sales tax balance, taxable income reconciliation and fiscal account balances.

  • KPI dashboard

Growth, Profitability, Liquidity, Cash and Activity.

Quebec and Canada

Both tax vocabularies, side by side

Work in Quebec mixes English and French terms. This is how they line up.

Optional module: Zakat & Compliance

Off by default and switched on per business. It classifies accounts as halal, haram or mixed, calculates zakatable assets against nisab, and tracks interest purification. Methods differ between schools of thought, so the method is chosen in the module.

Where Kitab is, and what it doesn’t do

  • Kitab is in development. There is no working product yet, only a requirements document and a functional design.
  • The first phase is manual data entry. Bank feeds, document scanning and payments are planned for later phases.
  • Kitab is planned to produce filing-ready exports. It does not file with CRA or Revenu Québec for you.
  • Pricing isn’t set yet.

Questions

Before you ask

Can I use Kitab today?

Not yet. Kitab is in development: there is a requirements document and a functional design, but no working product. Early access comes first.

Will Kitab file my taxes for me?

No. Kitab is planned to produce filing-ready exports. You or your accountant still file with CRA and Revenu Québec.

Which taxes is it set up for?

Federal and Quebec: a CRA and Revenu Québec profile with GST/QST, ITC/ITR, capital cost allowance and corporate tax rate parameters. Rates are parameters for each business, because they change.

Do I have to enter everything by hand?

At first, yes. The first phase is manual entry. Bank feeds, document scanning and payments are planned for later phases.

Is the Zakat module required?

No. It is off by default and switched on per business.

What will it cost?

Pricing isn’t set yet. We will announce it before launch.
